The only thing they have to work with on that game is the A.I. The level design specially is as godlike as the best Build Engine games out there like Blood. Will probably buy Wrath when it's finally out of EA and finished just like Prodeus.

There's a special charm with making good 90's looking sprites in retro shooters that not everyone can achieve. That's the same problem with that cartoony looking fps called Viscerafest, really off putting. Prodeus on the other hand got the retro balance just right with the graphics without looking ugly or blocky as all hells. It takes a lot of personality out of the game and adds to the overall blandness, the ost is really good though. I really like how Prodeus looks but i think it's still too EA for a buy at that price tag.Įven though Civvie11 recommended Dusk i don't like the fact that is too reliant on using the most basic of blocky models and palettes that ever existed FOR EVERYTHING. I also recommend a Doom TC called Ashes 2063 which is pretty damn Godlike ( OST and Level Design ) in my opinion and the guy ( Vostyok ) is still working on the next Episode. The OST is also good particularly before the last Episodes. getting stuck behind walls ( The Classic Build Engine Issue ) but is still challenging enough in Maximum Fury. Ion Fury is a million times better than most retros on that list. I'm going to keep it wishlisted and see if any of your above issues get tweaked/fixed. I read that it was also incomplete, so the $25 price tag turned me off a bit. It takes a lot of inspiration from Duke Nukem 3D, which was awesome for its time. Since this post, I also purchased Ion Fury. I'm not opposed to the retro FPS Renaissance, but things like labyrinthian level design don't need to be replicated.

Since this post, I downloaded the ModDB build the developer had published for free before releasing on Steam for future updates. I just think that game is not for everyone. But I know some people who loved the game, so don't take my opinion too seriously. To me Hedon looks more like a bad Doom total conversion than a genuine game. I didn't like the map design, I didn't like the game art, I didn't like the weapons, I didn't like the enemies. Originally posted by tcassat:I bought Hedon recently and, honestly, I didn't like almost anything. The game has no middle ground, or it is braindead easy, or it becomes a mess where you have little control over what is happening and need to be moving erratically to trick the AI that tries to predict your position. When the game decides to offer something difficult with group battles (end of the Descent level, for example), things become a complete mess. After you learn about how weapons work and how enemies react, you will repeat the same approaches from beginning to end and even on Ultra Hard, practically everything will start to look extremely easy and bland. But in my opinion the combat of the game has no depth at all. Prodeus has extremely good things, such as character movement, gunplay, map design, etc.

There is also an excess of enemies that are just annoying (something that is apparently mandatory in all games made in Build). Ion Fury is worth it, but you must keep in mind that the engine is derived from Build so you will have several problems like completely retarded enemies unable to deal with the level geometry, bad collision detection, bad physics, etc. I bought Hedon recently and, honestly, I didn't like almost anything.
